An Edinburgh Fringe show starring Lulu has been cancelled at the 11th hour, apparently after poor ticket sales.
The singer, 75, was due to appear at an In Conversation with Christopher Biggins event at Prestonfield House Hotel on Friday evening but organisers said it had been called off due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
A source close to the event told the Daily Record: “I’m afraid poor ticket sales have led to the decision to cancel. It’s unfortunate but that is the situation.
“Very few people were expected to walk up as it is a destination too far out from the main Fringe shows to get walk-ups and sales have been slow. I think Lulu is more popular when she is singing.”
The Glasgow-born singer’s career has spanned six decades since she burst on to the music scene in the 1960s with her debut single Shout at the age of 15.
The Fringe Prestonfield website had advertised the show saying: “Lulu’s career has been marked by versatility, extending beyond music to encompass acting and television hosting.
“Her iconic song To Sir with Love, from the film of the same name, became a timeless classic.
“Throughout the decades, Lulu continued to evolve, embracing various musical genres and collaborating with artists such as David Bowie and became the iconic leading voice for James Bond’s The Man with the Golden Gun.
“Lulu’s contributions to the industry earned her numerous accolades, including a Grammy nomination for Whos’ Foolin’ Who. Lulu’s vibrant personality and talent have made her a beloved figure in the entertainment world, with a career spanning over six decades.”
A statement from Fringe Prestonfield said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances we very much regret that Lulu will now not be appearing alongside Christopher Biggins on Friday, August 23, at 7pm. All ticketholders have been told they will be offered a full refund.”
A concert at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall in November as part of her Champagne for Lulu UK tour will still go ahead.
